- OCEANS -

"This song was written on a flight to Chicago, I was travelling to Michigan to go and see Henry Doss at the time. We were getting together to record and work on some tracks together. I always take my notebooks on board during long haul flights, this is one of two songs I've written at high altitude, Somewhere inbetween getting on and getting off I got hit by something, so I sat back and figured it out, at the time the sky outside was amazing, almost like the clouds on the front of the E.P, I love flying ! I did take down the altitude and ground speed details at the time so those are listed at the top of every page of this mini-site !

The song was recorded at Fairview Studios in the UK over a day. John Spence and I sat down to have a listen to the rough track and at that point I knew it would always have a special place as being one of the songs that really turned everything on it's head, at that time I had recorded an album of acoustic songs and in comparison this track was a changing point in terms of what I wanted to produce out of my studio work at the time.

A while later, Henry's wife, Chris is playing the track in her car, Henry and I are sat inside their house in MI, and we hear this loud la, la, la, la type sound arriving outside, every since, Henry says Chris has played this song at high volume in the car, cruising along, and almost everyone I played it to in the time running up to making the E.P had commented on how catchy it was, so I really wanted to release this song, it is probably the most significant track on the E.P for me in terms of what it represents and how it changed everything and will always be special !"

- DEPART -

I thought I'd write a song about my experiences in Michigan, I chose 'Depart' as one of the songs we would work on when I went back to the USA to record with Henry Doss and John Beland at Frontier Studios, Copemish, MI. Henry's band, John and I got together to play on the track.

I felt completely at home recording at the studio as our first Henry/Emma collaboration was recorded there. Scott who owns and engineers at the studio is wonderful, his wife makes all sorts of amazing food for us and looks after everyone, the studio is beautiful, a nice space to be in, and in a gorgeous area looking out onto vast fields of trees. John Beland is great to work with and has also worked with some amazing people too, here is a special video clip of John and me working on 'Depart'

Completely unbeknown to me at the time, as it happens, there is also a ship in Traverse City called 'The State of Michigan'. This is the opening line of the song, by pure coincidence it turned out that I had written about it but just didn't know it existed which was strange when I did find out.

- WHEN I LOOKED @ YOU -

This un-named track had been recorded previously in demo format at Frontier Studios with Henry's band, we decided to record a few takes at the end of a session one night, the band had never really heard the song before so I was interested to see how it would end up sounding. It turned out as this rough and rather loud rock type song. Just after we finished the track, the bass player, John Hefty walked outside, and I noticed the first star in the sky over the studio ! He said "Why don't you call it 'When I Looked At You'" so the name stuck and that's why.

The track stayed around for a while too before it finally ended up sounding like it does on the E.P. This is the result the second time round and is the second of two songs produced with John Beland.
